Discover Traffic Gardens

Reading time: 2 min.

Question: What if the first step to climate-smart + child-friendly communities was not a billion-dollar blueprint . . . but a playground? At the 2025 Velo-City Conference in Gdańsk, Youth4Planet’s C.A.T. (our “Climate Action Tiger”) and I sat down with a quiet force of nature: Fionnuala Quinn, founder of Discover Traffic Gardens. With decades of civil engineering experience and a warm heart, Fionnuala is re-imagining how children . . . and communities . . . learn to move.

Through her work designing traffic gardens = child-scaled x car-free miniature street networks . . . Fionnuala is making Road Safety teachable AND joyful.

These are not simulations. They are real-world design labs, where kids:

  • learn how Communities work
  • co-create mobility spaces
  • and gain the confidence to ride + speak up + imagine better streets

Fionnuala has written guides for cities (including Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.), and advised Departments of Transportation across the U.S. Her work is not hypothetical . . . it is being built + drawn + chalked + ridden + ribbon-cut inaugurated by children AND adults nationwide.

In a country where youth biking rates have declined steeply over the past two decades, and safe routes to school remain a distant dream for many, Fionnuala’s work addresses real and urgent gaps.

What do these child-led “traffic gardens” offer?

SDG 3 = Health: Safe, fun physical activity in fresh air
SDG 4 = Quality Education: Civic learning, systems thinking, urban literacy
SDG 11 = Sustainable Cities: Streets as spaces for everyone . . . ages 2 to 92
SDG 13 = Climate Action: Early adoption of low-carbon mobility habits
SDG 16 = Inclusive Institutions: Kids literally hand their ideas to city leaders
SDG 17 = Partnerships: From civil engineers to birthday party planners . . . everyone joins in

Youth4Planet recorded a 7-minute interview together with this DOer. This interview is short, sweet, and deeply moving. In it, Fionnuala does not pitch a product. She shares a practice: an invitation to co-create a world that truly includes children.

As she says, “Children already live in the built world. Why not teach them to build it better?”

🙏 Thank you, Fionnuala, for reminding us that dignity starts small . . . with colored paint + a little street + and the idea that kids deserve a voice in public space.

🛴 Let’s draw a new community. One crosswalk, one conversation, one traffic garden at a time.
